Self Portrait

Of European heritage Paul Toms was born on the land of the Wiradjuri people in central New South Wales.

He grew up in Canberra where he studied sculpture at the School of Art at ANU. Through his work he explored the relationship between the individual, spirituality and the natural world, using structural forms and experimental drawing techniques.

Paul then moved to Melbourne, continuing similar themes in his work, he also developed an interest in the effects of the built environment on these and the place of the artist within community.

Over the years he has taken part in over twenty shows, including the Blake Prize and a number of solo exhibitions, he has facilitated art groups and dabbled in illustration.

These days finds himself drawn to the ordinary and, guided by his young daughter, exploring the ways that the everyday embodies great significance.
