Self Portrait

Of European heritage Paul Toms was born on the land of the Wiradjuri people in central New South Wales.

He grew up in Canberra where he studied sculpture at the School of Art at ANU. Through his work he explored the relationship between the individual, spirituality and the natural world, using structural forms, elemental material and imagery and experimental drawing techniques.

Paul moved to Melbourne, continuing similar themes while developing an interest in the effects of the built environment and community on these relationships.

Over the years he has taken part in over twenty shows, including the Blake Prize and a number of solo exhibitions, he has facilitated art groups and dabbled in illustration.

He has recently moved back to Canberra and finds himself guided by his young daughters and his interest in ritual process, drawn to the ordinary and exploring the ways that the mundane can embody great significance.
